Common quote pitfalls

Illustrative examples only, not real quotes. No rates or amounts are implied.

  • Illustrative example

    FOB quote with no freight

A supplier quotes FOB Shenzhen. Freight and insurance to the UK are your cost, and duty and VAT are charged on them too, so the price you were quoted is not what you will pay.

  • Illustrative example

    DDP quote from overseas

The supplier says “all duties included”. They act as importer, so you usually cannot reclaim the import VAT, and you need proof they are set up to import into the UK.

  • Illustrative example

CIF quote to a UK port

Freight to the port is included, but terminal handling, customs clearance and delivery to your door usually are not.
